Uptrust is looking to immediately add an experienced Product Manager to help guide the next evolution of our platform. This will be our first full-time PM hire, an opportunity for you to make a tangible difference with your work while helping to shape a budding product organization. If you’re looking for a role where you can have a huge impact on both your company and the world, we’d love to talk to you.
Uptrust is an innovative public benefit corporation supporting criminal justice reform. We’ve built the leading communication platform for helping people to successfully navigate the criminal legal system in both pretrial and post-incarceration situations. Our tools are already supporting more than 500,000 low-income individuals in 200+ jurisdictions across the United States. Uptrust helps reduce jail populations, allowing more citizens to live free and productive lives. Additionally, we are uniquely committed to never charging and never geolocating our users.
Uptrust is currently a team of 15, distributed coast-to-coast in the US, with plans to continue growing throughout 2021-22. We closed our seed round of funding earlier this year and, unlike many smaller startups, we already have seven-figure ARR as well as near- and long-term plans for product and revenue expansion.
Our work is backed by leading impact investors and foundations, including The Decarceration Fund, Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, Stand Together, Luminate, Schmidt Futures, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and RFK Human Rights. Check out press coverage of our latest funding round in TechCrunch.
What you’ll do
As our first full-time PM you’ll have immediate responsibility for all new features added to the Uptrust platform. You can expect to move fast; every week will present new challenges with real-world implications. Our experienced and capable Engineering team does not need hand holding so you can expect to spend most of your time focused on understanding the most important problems to be solved and identifying effective solutions You will lead user research and product discovery, develop requirements, determine scope for new features, coordinate product roll outs, communications, and training as necessary, and collaborate across all functions at the company.
In addition to taking on a full complement of PM responsibilities day-to-day, you’ll also get to contribute at a strategic level. You will be expected to provide guidance on roadmap priorities and you’ll play an integral part in making decisions that impact hundreds of thousands of justice-involved people. Additionally, you’ll partner with both the VP of Engineering & Product and our CEO on broader product and business strategy.
Our Product Management practice is in its infancy here at Uptrust so you’ll have an opportunity to leave an outsized imprint on the organization. That means helping to define Product processes and to establish the structure upon which the team can be further expanded in the future. If you’re looking for a place where your voice will be heard and make a difference and you can help shape an entire organization, this is it.
Who you are
- Seasoned Product Manager who can hit the ground running. We need a proven PM with at least three years of experience who can be self-directed and immediately excel. If you haven’t taken multiple software products from idea to launch or you’re still at a point in your career where you need a lot of day-to-day guidance, this probably isn’t the right role for you.
- Prior early startup experience. Working in an early stage startup presents a unique set of challenges. Having one or more startups and a demonstrated ability to be successful as a PM in the face of ambiguity and shifting demands is valuable to us. If you feel most comfortable in large, hierarchical organizations where you can take orders and stay in your lane, this probably isn’t the right role for you.
- Relentless customer focus and empathy. The criminal justice space is complicated and we have to be mindful to avoid doing any harm while we strive for positive impact. We need a PM whose first instinct when faced with a choice is to learn more from customers. If you never lose sleep over gaps in your understanding of customers, this probably isn’t the right role for you.
- Passionate about collaboration and an effective communicator. We want to build our team with people who see the value in a team-first approach, clearly communicated ideas, and listening. If you enjoy playing hero or don’t love working cross-functionally with Engineering, Sales, and beyond, this probably isn’t the right role for you.
Additionally, we would like to encourage anyone who is underrepresented in tech and/or previously justice-involved to consider applying for this role if you believe you’re close to what we’re looking for. Your life experience could be a positive differentiator in your ability to be successful in this role that could make up for other small gaps. We’d prefer to talk to you rather than have you self-select out.
What We Offer
This is a full-time role reporting to the VP of Engineering & Product with benefits and competitive salary/equity based on experience. Our benefits package includes 401k, healthcare, vision, dental coverage (all for you and your family), and equipment for your home office needs. Lastly, while we are a growing startup, we are also committed to helping all of our team maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life, especially during the pandemic when the line has been blurred for so many.
